Mukono Diocese is rallying Christians, well wishers and the general public to support a grand charity run scheduled for Saturday, 15th November 2025, aimed at raising funds for the construction of a new 5,000 seater St. Phillip’s and Andrew’s Cathedral at the diocesan headquarters on Mukono Hill.

Speaking during NBS Morning Breeze on Friday, The Archdeacon of Seeta Archdeaconry Venerable Canon Edward Kironde Balamaze, emphasised the significance of the project, noting that the current cathedral has served the congregation for four decades.

“We are preparing to build a new cathedral for the Mukono Diocese. After 40 years of service, the current church has served the people faithfully, but it is now time for renewal,” said Canon Balamaze.

He further highlighted the vision behind the initiative and the leadership of the Diocesan Bishop.

“The Bishop of Mukono is leading the congregation and all supporters in constructing a modern cathedral for our time. This is the purpose of the run taking place on 15th November.”

The charity run will feature 10km, 5km, and 3km categories, making it an inclusive event for all age groups and abilities. Participants will assemble at 6:00 AM at the Cathedral on Mukono Hill, near Uganda Christian University.

“It will be a wonderful day designed to accommodate people of all ages and abilities, promoting health and well-being for everyone,” Canon Balamaze said.

Promoting wellness is central to the event, in keeping with the Church’s mission to nurture both body and spirit.

“The run is intended to promote physical fitness, as encouraged in the Bible, and to support our health as people of God. The Church, Cathedral Team, and Resource Mobilisation Committee have also organized a health camp on the same day, immediately after the run.”

Alongside the physical activities, the Diocese expects a vibrant spiritual experience.

“We also expect to receive the word of God from our host, the Bishop, to nourish us spiritually… We especially encourage the young people to come and be part of this experience!”

The project is already underway, with significant progress achieved.

“God has already blessed us with about 1B Shs which was used in the first phase. We are now in the second phase of construction, which has already been launched by the Bishop,” Canon Balamaze said, adding that the total cost is estimated between Shs 5B and Shs 9B.

Canon Balamaze called upon Christians, well-wishers, and the greater community to stand in unity and support the initiative.

“We therefore ask you to stand with us as we build the Cathedral. Alongside the run, we have explored several ways to raise funds for its construction — including dinners and other initiatives,” he said.

The Diocesan Youth Worker, Rev. Cyrus Mulwana, emphasised the holistic benefits of the day, particularly the health camp that will run alongside the event.

“You should expect a wide range of health screenings. There will be medical consultations, blood checkups, and many other health services available.”

Rev. Mulwana also encouraged participation in various forms, stressing that even those unable to physically run can contribute.

“In case you are unable to run physically, you can still support by buying kits for someone else. The goal is to raise funds so that this mega project can be completed in good time.”

“You can access the kits throughout the Diocese, specifically at the Parish Headquarters, for only Shs 20,000. You can also purchase one from Unique Garments in Mukono town.”

The new St. Phillip’s and Andrew’s Cathedral will seat 5,000 worshippers and is designed to serve as a modern worship and mission centre for generations to come.

The current Cathedral, although revered and historic, can no longer accommodate the growing number of congregants.
