The National Unity Platform (NUP) has confirmed that its president and 2026 presidential flag bearer Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu will be officially nominated by the Electoral Commission on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at exactly 8:00 AM.
This development comes amidst mounting tension between the opposition party and the Electoral Commission, with NUP accusing the commission of acting in bad faith to sabotage its ongoing mobilisation efforts.

Speaking from the party headquarters in Makerere Kavule, NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya accused the Electoral Commission, led by Justice Simon Byabakama, of intentionally targeting two major rallies the party had scheduled in Katwe and Nateete.

"The Electoral Commission's actions are clearly meant to interfere with our activities and disrupt our outreach efforts in Kampala," Rubongoya told the press.

Despite the alleged interference, Rubongoya asserted that the party would proceed with its planned rallies.

"We shall not be stopped. We paid for these venues on time and have already cleared the 20 million shillings required by authorities," he emphasized.

Rubongoya also confirmed that the Electoral Commission had verified the final batch of signatures required for Kyagulanyi’s nomination, officially clearing the way for his appearance on the ballot.

In a related development, the NUP vetting committee concluded the internal selection process for aspirants seeking to run for Parliament on the party’s ticket.

The exercise, which saw hundreds of hopefuls vetted across the country, is part of NUP's broader electoral strategy ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Harriet Chemuntai, Chairperson of the Electoral Management Committee (EMC), said the process was "rigorous but necessary activity was to ensure credible and capable representation under the NUP flag."

As the nomination date approaches, political observers anticipate heightened political activity as NUP rallies its supporters, while tensions with the Electoral Commission remain unresolved.

Earlier , the National Unity Platform (NUP) had been officially notified by the Electoral Commission (EC) that its presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, would be nominated on Tuesday 23rd September 2025.

Coincidentally, the same day scheduled for the nomination of NRM presidential candidate Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

On nomination day , NUP had also planned to hold two rallies , one in Katwe and another in Nateete, while President Museveni was expected to address supporters at Kololo.

However, Police in a letter has not cleared the Katwe Venue , citing safety concerns and impending business disruption.
