Authorities in Rukungiri District are on high alert following the theft of a police firearm from Rwakaraba Police Post in Nyakishenyi Sub-county.

According to Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, SP Elly Maate, the incident occurred on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at around 8:30 PM.

It is alleged that on the morning of the same day, Police Constable (PC) Pius Muyambi, service number 83982, reported for duty at the post.

His assigned firearm, a Sub-Machine Gun (SMG) loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition, was reportedly kept in his bedroom adjacent to the station’s counter.

SP Maate explained that at around 8:00 PM, PC Muyambi left the station to have supper at a nearby hotel located approximately 60 meters from the post, leaving the firearm inside his room.

Upon returning, he was shocked to find the door to his room broken into and the gun missing.

He quickly raised the alarm, drawing the attention of nearby residents who responded to the scene. The officer in charge of the post, who was away receiving medical attention at the time, was also informed.

The scene was promptly visited by the Officer in Charge of Rukungiri Police Station, accompanied by the canine unit. However, no immediate leads were recovered during the initial investigations.

As a precautionary measure, PC Muyambi was taken into custody for questioning as inquiries into the matter continue.

Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and security-conscious.

ASP Maate called on residents to report any suspicious individuals or objects to local leaders or nearby security offices to aid in the swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

The theft of the weapon poses a serious security threat, and police continue to intensify efforts to recover the firearm and bring the culprits to justice.
