I had the privilege of sitting down with Rt. Hon. Anitah Among, the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, for a conversation that was anything but ordinary. What began as a formal interview quickly turned into an inspiring exchange about leadership, purpose, youth, and the value of staying true to one’s roots.
When I asked the Speaker what she would be doing if she weren’t in politics, she paused thoughtfully and replied, “I would be a farmer — but not just any farmer. I would hire young people like you to work with me. I believe in empowering youth to grow with purpose.” That statement struck a deep chord. It was a glimpse into a woman who, despite her powerful position, remains passionate about uplifting young people.
Our conversation moved from politics to personal reflections. When I asked what’s on her playlist, she gave a simple but profound answer: “Goodness of God.” That single choice speaks volumes about her values, grounded in gratitude, humility, and faith.
Perhaps most touching was when she shared how she spends her free time: visiting Bukedea Comprehensive School. “That’s where I feel most alive — surrounded by students, helping them shape their future,” she told me. It’s clear that beyond the titles and headlines, the Speaker’s heart lies in mentorship and impact.
