President Museveni is set to grace this year’s St Gonzaga Gonza Day celebrations on July 6 as Chief Guest , according to Deputy Presidential Press Secretary and Head of Mobilisation, Faruk Kirunda.
The annual event, held at Bugonza village in Namugongo Sub-county, Kaliro District, commemorates the life and martyrdom of St Gonzaga Gonza, one of the 22 Ugandan Martyrs killed for their Christian faith during the reign of Kabaka Mwanga II.
Hajj Kirunda confirmed the President’s attendance, noting that the celebration will proceed without the requirement for COVID-19 testing for pilgrims—an indication of eased public health restrictions.
“This is a spiritually significant event for the region and the country,” Kirunda said. “The President is attending to stand in solidarity with believers and to honour one of Uganda’s greatest martyrs.”
The day will be marked by a grand mass led by the Bishop of Jinja Diocese, Rt. Rev. Charles Martin Wamika, joined by bishops from various dioceses.
The event is expected to draw thousands of pilgrims from across Uganda and beyond.
In addition to celebrating the legacy of St. Gonzaga Gonza, the faithful will also remember the late Pope Francis and offer prayers for the new pontiff, Pope Leo XIV.
Organizers say preparations are in high gear, with security and logistical arrangements coordinated in anticipation of a large turnout.
Gonza, a royal page and early convert to Christianity, is remembered for his unwavering faith and resilience under persecution, making him a symbol of courage and devotion for many Ugandan Catholics.
The President’s attendance underscores the significance of Uganda Martyrs in shaping the country's national and spiritual identity.
