The Ministry of Tourism has launched an initiative to transform Tororo Rock, one of Uganda's most iconic landmarks, into a world-class tourism destination.
This development aims to unlock the full potential of the rock, which has been underutilised for decades, despite being the defining feature of Tororo District.
With an initial investment of Shs177 million, the ministry has developed a comprehensive master plan, which was officially presented to the Tororo District Local Government.
Speaking at the unveiling, James Mboijjana, the Principal Tourism Officer at the Ministry of Tourism, highlighted the significance of this investment.
"I know everyone is curious about the overall project cost," Mboijjana stated. "As of now, Shs177 million has been allocated towards the development of this master plan."
The initiative has generated enthusiasm among local leaders, who see it as a game-changer for the district’s economy.
Apollo Yeri Ofwono, a municipal official, expressed optimism, noting that Tororo Rock's development could elevate its status not only within Uganda but across Africa.
"This is our natural resource that we have not utilized," Ofwono remarked.
"In Africa, there are three iconic mountains, including those in Nigeria and South Africa. While others remain utilized, Tororo Rock wasn't utilized. We're indeed proud"
Kenneth Orono, the Mayor of Tororo Municipality, called on locals to embrace the opportunities the project presents.
"Hospitality is going to be a bigger thing, hotels, restaurants, and accommodation for tourists. Our people need to think broader and make investments to benefit from this initiative," Orono urged.
The project envisions transforming Tororo Rock into a premier tourist site with features such as:
A cable car for easier rock climbing, a camping site to attract adventure enthusiasts, Hotel apartments to cater to visitors' accommodation needs.
Its strategic location at the border positions Tororo Rock as a top-tier destination in Eastern Uganda, with potential to boost local revenue and create employment opportunities.
The initiative also addresses long-standing challenges, including encroachment on the rock by private developers.
Local leaders believe this transformation will protect the landmark while significantly enhancing its value.
"This master plan is a big step forward in preserving and capitalizing on Tororo Rock," said Ofwono. "It is now up to us to support and grow alongside this development."
Once completed, Tororo Rock is expected to attract tourists from within Uganda and beyond, cementing its status as a must-visit destination in Africa.
