The Greater Bushenyi Police have refuted claims spreading on online platforms about a disturbing case of family abuse, where a woman is accused of hammering a nail into her stepson’s skull, clarifying that the incident did not occur in Uganda.
Numerous messages suggested the event took place in Bushenyi District, shocking the local community and raising concerns on social media. This prompted the police to launch a deeper investigation on Monday.
The heartbreaking story of the boy, whose name remains anonymous according to the police, has gone viral on social media, with many people demanding justice. Posts shared on WhatsApp groups and TikTok have further fuelled the spread of this distressing news.
“I received many calls on Monday regarding this incident and engaged the district police, ” said Senior Superintendent of Police Tumusiime Marcial. “However, it is important to clarify that this incident did not happen any where in uganda, it happened in Tanzania.”
According to the police and residents different accounts placed the alleged incident in Bushenyi district in the areas of Nyamushekyera, Bumbaire, and St. Kagwa.
These posts falsely claimed that the accused stepmother had been arrested and transported to Nyamushekyera Detention Center, claims the police have strongly dismissed as untrue.
Outrage on social media has intensified, with many accusing stepmothers of cruelty and vowing never to leave their children in the care of stepmothers.
“This is a classic example of how misinformation can lead to widespread panic and distrust in the community,” Tumusiime added.
As Nile post , we visited Bushenyi District to conduct our own investigation, speaking to residents at the grassroots level regarding the case. Residents expressed uncertainty about the specific family involved, though the rumours have sparked widespread suspicion.
"We heard the story going around, but we don’t know who it happened to," said one resident. "It’s concerning to think that something like this could happen in our community."
"We heard that the nailed boy passed on today at KIU hospital,"
Local authorities also reported that they took the initiative to conduct village-to-village searches in an effort to identify the home where this incident was alleged to have occurred.
“People are worried, and we need to find the truth behind these rumours,” said Muhame Deusidedit, GISO of Bumbaire Parish. “We made a house to house search, from village to village but we have failed to identify this boys home.
Every household has noted that they are not certain of the family where the incident happened, ” he added.
Speaking on the matter, Senior Superintendent Musiime Marcial confirmed that the incident actually happened in Tanzania, urging the public to remain calm.
He also warned against the spread of false news, stating that the police are investigating the source of the rumours and plan to arrest those responsible for spreading the misinformation.
“We must all be responsible in how we share information, as it can have serious consequences. Our investigations are still going on whoever is behind this matter, sharing this content and causing tension, will be arrested," noted Senior Superintendent Tumusiime Marcial, Spokesperson Greater Bushenyi
