Construction of the long-awaited Busega-Mpigi Expressway, a key project designed to alleviate traffic congestion on the Masaka highway, is currently 43.55% complete.
This 23.7 km dual carriageway, featuring four lanes, four interchanges, 13 bridges, and four toll plazas, is set to significantly enhance transportation efficiency in the region.
During a recent site visit, Gen. Katumba Wamala, the Minister of Works and Transport, assessed the progress and identified challenges that may hinder timely completion.
“We are committed to ensuring this project stays on schedule. The expressway is crucial for improving traffic flow and facilitating trade across the Northern Corridor,” Gen. Wamala stated.
With a target completion date set for August 2027, the expressway is expected to serve as a vital artery for logistics, connecting Uganda with neighbouring countries like Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“This project will not only ease congestion but also boost economic activities by improving access to major routes,” Gen. Wamala added.
Gen Katumba Wamala adds that the project’s extensive network, including 21 km of additional link roads, will enhance accessibility to the Northern Bypass, Entebbe Expressway, and Mityana Road.
“The interchanges will create a seamless flow of traffic, making it easier for goods to move in and out of Kampala and beyond.” Says Gen Wamala.
As the construction team works to overcome obstacles, the government remains focused on its commitment to this transformative infrastructure project.
“We understand the urgency and significance of this expressway for both commuters and the economy. The Ministry of Works will provide the necessary support to address any challenges that arise,” Gen. Wamala affirmed.
With anticipation building, the Busega-Mpigi Expressway is poised to become a landmark development in Uganda’s transport infrastructure, promising a brighter and more efficient future for travelers and businesses alike.
