UPDF delivers: 30 marine soldiers graduate, strengthening Uganda’s naval force
The Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) Marine unit has successfully graduated 30 soldiers who completed a three-month Coxswain Marine course at Ntokolo Marine Base in Magamaga Town Council.
The ceremony, held yesterday, marked a significant milestone in the UPDF’s continuous efforts towards building a professional military force capable of operating across all terrains.

Speaking during the graduation, Brigadier General Alex Olupot, who oversees Joint Staff Training and Doctrine, emphasized the importance of ongoing professional development within the UPDF.
He reaffirmed the President of Uganda and Commander-in-Chief, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s commitment to transforming the UPDF into a highly skilled and versatile force.
“Today’s ceremony is a testament to the Commander-in-Chief’s promise of a professional UPDF capable of defending Uganda on land, in the air, and on the water. The skills you've acquired will enhance our ability to guarantee national security,” Olupot stated.
The General urged the new coxswains to maintain their dedication to learning and improving their skills, emphasising that continuous training is key to their success in service.
He also acknowledged the positive feedback from local communities regarding the professionalism of the UPDF, saying it reflects the army’s strong commitment to its core values.
Olupot highlighted the deep connection between the UPDF and Ugandan civilians, saying, “Just as fish cannot survive without water, we in the UPDF cannot thrive without the support of civilians. We are interconnected in our shared mission to protect and serve the country.”
Brigadier General Michael Nyarwa, Commander of the UPDF Marines Brigade, echoed these sentiments. He described the course as foundational, adding that it opens the door for more specialised and advanced training in marine operations. Brig. Gen. Nyarwa thanked the Commander-in-Chief for his unwavering support in shaping a modern and capable military.

Private Waligo Stephen (Best in Leadership)
Resident District Commissioner Thomas Matembe praised the UPDF Marines for maintaining strong relations with the local community, stressing that the skills they demonstrated reflect the UPDF's preparedness to defend Uganda’s borders.
