The School of Law, Makerere University has suspended a student over alleged sexual harassment.

The student, whose names have been withheld, was suspended following reports he had sexually assaulted another student.

In a statement by the Acting principal, Dr Zahara Nampewo, the student has been suspended, pending further investigations.

brought to the attention of the School of Law and University management; the accused student has since been suspended from the University as further investigations are conducted," Nampewo said.

Following the suspension, the university expressed commitment to ensuring a safe and respectful environment that is conducive for learners.

"Sexual harassment is a horrific human rights violation and a criminal offence. We recognize the direct and indirect, long- and short-term devastating effects of sexual harassment and have a zero tolerance to this conduct," Nampewo said.

She added, "Makerere University has an approved policy against sexual harassment and we

shall deal seriously with this vice and take corrective action as may be deemed

necessary."

Meanwhile, students and staff have been urged to provide any information they might have about the students.

"All information shared will be treated with utmost confidence."

According to the Makerere University Policy and Regulations Against Sexual Harassment revised in 2018, one found guilty of sexual harassment is put through a disciplinary committee.

Depending on the degree of the offense, the penalties could be, suspension, Counseling, a restraining order, apology to the victim, Criminal investigation and prosecution, among others.

Both the complainant and respondent have a right of appeal if dissatisfied with the decision of the internal disciplinary organs of the University.

The Policy and Regulations Against Sexual Harassment is intended to address acts and practices related to sexual harassment at all levels within the structures of Makerere University.
