Four teachers, including the head teacher of Arengesiep Secondary School in Nabilatuk District, have been arrested over allegations of reporting to work while intoxicated during school hours.
The arrests followed an inspection led by Resident District Commissioner Linos Lotem Tumkori and Deputy Resident District Commissioner Jimmy Tebanyang Lokoru, with support from the Uganda Police Force.
The inspection was attended by Nabilatuk District LC V Chairperson Benedict Natimat, the Assistant Chief Administrative Officer and members of the District Executive Committee.
According to Tumkori, the inspection found the head teacher and three other members of staff allegedly under the influence of alcohol while on duty. They were arrested and detained at Lolachat Police Station pending investigations.
The inspection also uncovered suspected irregularities in the school's enrolment records.
Tumkori alleged that the school had inflated its student enrolment figures.
"Apart from drinking during working hours, the school management is also exaggerating student enrolment. During our inspection, the Senior Five and Senior Six classrooms were empty, yet the enrolment records indicated that students were present," he said.
District officials said the school had reported an enrolment of 394 students, but a physical headcount conducted during the inspection found only 229 learners present.
Authorities are now investigating whether the enrolment figures were deliberately inflated and whether administrative or legal action should be taken against those responsible.
District leaders warned that teachers are expected to maintain professional standards, saying misconduct in schools undermines the quality of education and learners' welfare.
Police had not announced any formal charges against the four teachers by the time of publication.
