Police in Luweero District are investigating a murder-suicide attempt that left a young woman dead and the Zirobwe Town Council community in deep shock on Saturday night.
The violent incident took place at the Kayiwa Complex Bar and Lodge, where what was intended to be a brief stay ended in tragedy.
The victim is identified as 26-year-old Caroline Kemirembe, a resident of Kikyusa Sub-County.
The prime suspect has been identified Boaz Namanya, a 26-year-old a resident of Wakiso District. Namanya was taken into custody and has been monitored under tight security following the incident.
According to ASP Sam Twiineamazima, the Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson, the sequence of events began at approximately 3:00 PM on March 28, when Namanya booked a room at the lodge.
He was later joined by Kemirembe, whom investigators believe was his romantic partner, at around 9:00 PM desperate cries for help were heard from the room.
"The couple had hired the lodge for a 'short rest' when screams were heard from within," ASP Twiineamazima stated.
Upon entering the room, Kemirembe had been stabbed multiple times and was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.The suspect reportedly attempted to take his own life.
ASP Twiineamazima confirmed that Namanya allegedly ingested a suspected poisonous substance and was rushed to a nearby health center for emergency treatment. Investigators have been working to determine the source of the poison and whether the attack was premeditated.
Namanya is in the police custody while receiving medical attention, pending interrogation once his condition stabilized.
Forensic teams processed the crime scene on Saturday night, recovering a knife believed to be the murder weapon and two smartphones belonging to the couple.
The body of Kemirembe was conveyed to the Kasana Luwero Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
However, police continue to investigate the motive behind the killing.
