Authorities have restored calm in Yumbe Town Council following a violent religious clash that left several people injured and property destroyed. Security agencies are investigating the incident and urging residents to cooperate as normalcy returns.
Security agencies in Yumbe District have quelled a violent religious confrontation that erupted on Tuesday, leaving multiple individuals injured and property damaged.
Preliminary reports indicate that the unrest was triggered by a man identified only as Kasimu, who allegedly preached against other religions and mobilized a group of Muslim youth to attack pork-selling establishments in the town.
The group reportedly began their actions by attacking the office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), prompting a rapid response from the Uganda Police Force and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
During the intervention, several people sustained injuries and were admitted to Yumbe Referral Hospital for treatment.
Authorities also confirmed that one motorcycle was set ablaze and that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the unrest.
Superintendent of Police Collins Asea, North West Nile Region Police Public Relations Officer, said security forces acted swiftly to restore order.
“Police and UPDF responded promptly to contain the situation. The area is now calm, and investigations are underway,” SP Asea said.
He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities as peace gradually returns to the town.
“We appeal to all residents to refrain from acts that may escalate the situation. Updates will be provided as investigations continue,” SP Asea added.
