Sheema District Police are investigating the killing of Betware Edison, a 63-year-old businessman from Kabwohe town, who died following a brutal attack early Monday morning.
Betware, a resident of Rutooma Cell, Rutooma Ward, Kabwohe Division in Sheema Municipality, was assaulted by unknown thugs shortly after leaving his home around 6 a.m. as he set out for work.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that as Betware stepped out of his gate, the assailants struck him on the head and fled with his bag and mobile phone.
Despite being injured, Betware proceeded to Neebs Bar where he later collapsed and was rushed to Bushenyi Medical Centre (BMC) for emergency care.
Due to the severity of his condition, Betware was referred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Upon receiving the report, police swiftly responded to the scene and deployed a canine unit, which led to the arrest of one male suspect who is currently in custody as investigations continue.
“At the scene, we recovered a piece of wood with suspected blood stains,” said Appolo Tayebwa, Regional Police Spokesperson for Greater Bushenyi. “We believe this evidence will help identify the killers.”
Betware’s body has undergone a post-mortem examination to establish the precise cause of death. Police have appealed to the public to remain calm and to provide any information that could assist in apprehending the remaining assailants.
“We urge the community to assist us discreetly with relevant information,” Tayebwa added.
