Police have arrested Eva Mbabazi, a woman in her early twenties, in connection with the sudden and mysterious death of Dr John Spire Kiggundu, whose body was discovered at Dream Guest House in Lubowa on June 21, 2025.
Dr Kiggundu, the proprietor of Henrob Hospital Zzana and a respected figure in the medical community, checked into the guest house along Entebbe Road at around 5:45pm but circumstances surrounding his death have been subject of much speculation.
His lifeless body was only recovered, a day later.
A post-mortem report whose details were read by the family members during the vigil indicated that he died of a heart attack.
But speculation that he had been missing for 15 hours prior and that there was foulplay stuck in medical circles and across social media platforms like a sore thumb while police continued to look into circumstances of the death
As speculation intensified online, Eva Mbabazi’s name quickly surfaced after she was identified as the last person seen with the late doctor.
Her identity was confirmed after police reviewed CCTV footage from the guest house, which captured her leaving the room where Dr Kiggundu had been staying shortly before his body was found.
Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed Mbabazi’s arrest, revealing that she had been under investigation since the incident.
“We have been looking for her, and finally this week we arrested her and brought her in,” Onyango stated.
While initially treated as a key witness, her arrest marks a significant turning point in the case.
Police say she has been fully cooperative with investigators, providing a detailed account of her interactions with Dr. Kiggundu that has helped reconstruct his final hours.
Onyango told the Nile Post that Police has since forwarded Mbabazi's file to the resident state attorney for perusal and guidance on the subsequent charges.
The case file has since been forwarded to the state attorney for legal review. According to police, no formal charges have been filed yet, as the case was initially registered as a general inquiry.
"It was a general inquiries file that we had opened and have forwarded it to the resident state attorney. We want the state attorney to guide us on whether she has a case to answer and what charge we should file,” Onyango said.
A decision from the state attorney will determine whether the case proceeds as a criminal prosecution or remains under general inquiry.
