NCBA Bank Uganda and Makerere University have officially launched the 2026 NCBA–Makerere Marathon, reaffirming their partnership to promote education, healthy living and community development.
The launch, held at Makerere University, brought together university leaders, corporate partners, students, alumni and the media to unveil the latest edition of one of Uganda's largest inclusive sporting events.
The annual marathon has grown into a major fixture on Uganda's sporting calendar, attracting thousands of participants while raising funds to support education and community development programmes.
Speaking at the launch, NCBA Bank Uganda Chief Executive Officer Mark Muyobo said the partnership reflects the bank's commitment to sustainability under its "Change the Story" initiative, which focuses on education, youth empowerment, sports, environmental conservation and community development.
"At NCBA, we are proud to support this journey in line with our Change the Story agenda. We believe that when opportunity is made accessible, ambitions become achievable, communities prosper and nations thrive," Muyobo said.
He described Makerere University as a key institution in developing future leaders, advancing research and driving innovation.
"Our partnership with Makerere University reflects our belief that sustainable development is achieved through strong collaborations. Universities play a vital role in shaping future leaders, fostering innovation and driving economic transformation," he said.
The 2026 marathon will feature a 42.2-kilometre race alongside 21-kilometre, 10-kilometre and five-kilometre categories, allowing both professional athletes and recreational runners to participate.
According to NCBA, the event has evolved beyond athletics into a platform that supports education while bringing together students, alumni, corporate organisations and the wider public.
"The Makerere University Marathon has grown into far more than a sporting event. It is a platform that transforms lives through education by bringing together students, alumni, corporates and the wider community to support a meaningful cause while promoting healthy living and community engagement," Muyobo said.
In July 2025, NCBA Bank Uganda committed Shs1.45 billion over five years to support the marathon and its associated community impact projects.
Organisers expect this year's edition to attract thousands of runners, reinforcing the marathon's status as one of Uganda's leading charity-driven sporting events.
Muyobo encouraged Ugandans to register for the marathon, saying participation would contribute to education and community development while promoting healthy lifestyles.
"Today's launch marks the beginning of another exciting journey. We encourage every Ugandan—whether student, alumnus, corporate partner, athlete or fitness enthusiast—to register, participate and become part of this important cause," he said.
NCBA Bank Uganda said it would continue partnering with Makerere University and other stakeholders to expand the marathon's impact and support Uganda's long-term socio-economic development.
