Traders who lost merchandise during the devastating floods of October 31, 2025, in Kampala are set to receive government compensation within the next three weeks.
The assurance follows a renewed commitment from the Ministry of Finance, bringing relief to hundreds of business owners still grappling with financial setbacks.
Government had previously pledged over Shs20 billion to support affected traders, but delays in disbursement had caused frustration, prompting some to plan a protest and strike on March 25.
However, the Chairperson of the Federation of Uganda Traders Associations (FUTA), John Kabanda, confirmed that the process is now on track.
“Government has agreed to compensate the affected traders within a period not exceeding three weeks,” Kabanda said, adding that a verified list compiled by a vetting committee will ensure transparency and fairness.
Traders in major Kampala arcades—including Pentagon City, Capital City, Gagawala, and Shawuriyako—are among the beneficiaries.
The compensation specifically targets those impacted by the October 2025 floods.
Following the renewed pledge, traders have called off the planned strike to allow authorities time to deliver on their promise.
Kabanda also noted that the government plans to engage traders on broader business concerns, including high taxes and operational challenges.
The development marks a significant step toward recovery for Kampala’s business community, many of whom continue to rebuild after the floods disrupted livelihoods and caused extensive losses.
