Uganda’s coffee sector is poised for a major transformation with the upcoming launch of the Inspire Africa Coffee Value Addition Plant, set to begin operations in March 2025.
This 60-acre facility, located in the heart of the country, is not just a step toward boosting Uganda’s coffee industry, but a major leap in adding value to one of the nation’s highest-value exports.
The Inspire Africa Group, under the visionary leadership of Nelson Tugume, is set to redefine Uganda’s coffee narrative.
The plant aims to increase Uganda’s current coffee export revenue of $1.3 billion to a staggering $5 billion within the next five years, a goal that has caught the attention of stakeholders in the sector.
What began as a small-scale coffee processing vision has rapidly evolved into a high-tech, world-class coffee processing plant.
The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, sourced from across the globe.
As of now, the construction of the plant is 75% complete, with equipment installation at 85%, according to the project manager, Sande Tinka Herbert.
Once fully operational, the Inspire Africa Coffee Value Addition Plant will feature a comprehensive range of coffee processing components designed to enhance the value chain:
- Wet Mill Process: For red cherries.
- Dry Mill: For processing dry coffee.
- Roastery: For roasting and grinding green beans.
- Freeze Drying: For further processing ground coffee into soluble form.
- Spray Drying: For turning ground coffee into a soluble form.
- Cold Brew and Cosmetics: Diversifying products beyond traditional coffee.
This diverse processing capability is expected to significantly increase the range of coffee products on the market, from brewed coffee to specialty items like cosmetics made from coffee derivatives.
The facility is already making an impact on the ground. The plant currently employs 450 people directly, with plans to expand further.
Additionally, thousands of local coffee farmers stand to benefit from the plant's operations, creating a ripple effect of economic activity.
The plant is not just a boost to the coffee sector, but also to Uganda’s tourism industry.
According to local MP Kamateneti, who represents women in Parliament, the plant’s success will stimulate numerous auxiliary sectors, including tourism and the agricultural supply chain.
A Call for Nationwide Expansion
While the Inspire Africa Coffee Value Addition Plant is a landmark development, both MPs and Nelson Tugume are calling for the establishment of similar plants across other regions of Uganda.
Tugume, echoing the sentiments of legislators, believes that this plant could serve as a benchmark for future plants throughout the country.
“In our NDP III, there were plans to set up similar plants in regions like Central and Eastern Uganda. Unfortunately, these plans haven’t materialized yet,” Tugume said.
“Now that I have the experience, I’m confident we can replicate this project faster and at a more affordable cost elsewhere.”
With Uganda’s coffee industry poised for growth, the Inspire Africa plant is not just an investment in infrastructure but a powerful catalyst for the entire coffee value chain.
The vision is clear: Uganda aims to become a global leader in coffee value addition, ensuring that more of the revenue stays within the country while creating employment and opportunities for local farmers.
By March 2025, when the plant is fully operational, it is expected that Uganda will take a giant leap toward realizing its coffee potential, turning the country's coffee sector into a thriving, multi-billion-dollar industry.
