Kampala University Vice Chancellor Prof Badru Kateregga has urged government to increase support for private universities, saying enhanced funding and collaboration would improve innovation and graduate quality in Uganda’s higher education sector.

Kampala University Founder and Vice Chancellor Prof. Badru Kateregga has appealed for increased government support to private universities, particularly in strengthening innovation-driven academic programmes and improving graduate outcomes.

Speaking during a press briefing at Kampala University’s Ggaba Campus, Prof. Kateregga said private institutions continue to face significant operational and financial challenges that affect their capacity to deliver high-quality education.

“We face numerous challenges in managing university operations. Greater government support would significantly improve the quality of graduates we produce,” he said.

The briefing was held ahead of the university’s 23rd graduation ceremony scheduled for Thursday this week, where more than 3,500 students are expected to graduate across various disciplines.

Prof. Kateregga noted that this year’s ceremony will go beyond the traditional awarding of degrees, incorporating recognition of broader institutional achievements, including excellence in sports.

“This graduation is special because we are not only awarding degrees but also celebrating milestones, including achievements in sports,” he said.

He congratulated the graduating class and encouraged them to uphold integrity and act as responsible ambassadors of the institution in their communities.

“Be good ambassadors wherever you go, and we shall continue to uphold the standards of this institution,” he said.

He also issued a caution to young people on the responsible use of digital platforms, urging them to use technology and social media constructively.

“Use technology and social media wisely so that you can benefit from them rather than be harmed,” he said.

On matters of safety, Prof. Kateregga assured parents, students, and invited guests that adequate security arrangements have been made for the graduation ceremony.

“We want to assure all parents and guests that security has been strengthened to ensure a safe and successful event,” he added.

The upcoming ceremony is expected to be one of the university’s largest, reflecting continued growth in enrolment and academic programmes at the private institution.
