The Mubende Magistrate Court has set January 27, 2026, to hear a vote recount application filed by National Resistance Movement candidate Dedan Mubangizi, challenging the declaration of Fred Tumwesigye, an Independent candidate, as the winner of the Buwekula South parliamentary seat.
In the application, Mubangizi has named three respondents: Fred Tumwesigye as the first respondent, the Mubende District Elections Officer as the second respondent, and the Electoral Commission as the third respondent.
According to the Notice of Motion, which is brought under Articles 1 and 61 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, Section 74 of the Parliamentary Elections Act (Cap. 177), and the Parliamentary Elections (Election Petitions) Rules, the matter will be heard on January 27, 2026, at 8am or soon thereafter.
Mubangizi is seeking a court order for a recount of votes contained in the ballot boxes for the directly elected Member of Parliament for Buwekula South Constituency.
He has also applied for an order restraining the Electoral Commission from gazetting the election results for the constituency until the determination and conclusion of the application and the intended recount.
The Mubende District Returning Officer, Ferdinand Tumwesigye Mulekezi, declared Fred Tumwesigye the winner after he polled 8,804 votes.
Mubangizi came second with 7,998 votes, while Edward Ssempiira of the National Unity Platform placed third with 1,915 votes.
