Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, Lira City Woman Member of Parliament and Minister of Health, has urged residents to participate in the forthcoming mayoral election, emphasizing the importance of choosing morally upright leaders with strong connections to government.
The 2026 mayoral and local government elections are scheduled for Thursday, January 22, following the presidential and parliamentary polls held on January 15.
Polling for various local council positions will continue through early February.
Appearing on a local radio station, Dr. Aceng appealed to voters to turn out in large numbers, as they did in previous elections, and to support candidates who uphold integrity.
“Please vote for God-fearing leaders who do not abuse others or use bad language,” she urged.
Dr. Aceng also endorsed Sam Atul for mayor, highlighting the importance of electing leaders with government connections to drive regional development.
“Development comes from the government, and we can only achieve it by electing leaders with connections in the government,” she said.
Reflecting on the recent parliamentary election, Dr. Aceng thanked the people of Lira City and the wider Lango sub-region for re-electing her.
About 64,000 of 139,000 registered voters cast their ballots, and she secured over 38,900 votes, defeating her closest rival by nearly 11,900 votes.
“I am happy that you overwhelmingly voted for the President, and I am honored to continue serving you in Parliament,” she said, acknowledging the trust placed in her and in the president.
As she prepares for her next term, Dr Aceng reiterated her commitment to advancing development and delivering on the promises made to her constituents.
