LDeborah Rwabwogo, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Chairperson for Lyantonde District and an independent aspirant for the Woman Member of Parliament seat, has warned that persistent divisions, personal rivalries, and infighting within the ruling party could jeopardise its chances in the upcoming general elections.
Ms Rwabwogo made the remarks while campaigning in Kisaluwoko Village, Kasagama Sub-county, where she engaged residents on governance, service delivery, and internal party democracy.
She expressed concern that internal wrangles among NRM leaders in Lyantonde have weakened party unity, accusing some members of prioritising personal interests over collective victory.
Having lost the NRM party primaries, Ms Rwabwogo is now contesting as an independent candidate.
She faces six contenders, including official NRM flag bearer Doreen Katusabe Birungi, National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Nalubega Halimah Zalwango, and four other independents.
During her address, Ms Rwabwogo alleged that internal sabotage within the party forced her into isolation.
She claimed that a document, allegedly forged by rivals, is being circulated to unlawfully remove her from her position as District NRM Chairperson on grounds that she is running as an independent.
Rwabwogo said her decision to contest outside the party ticket was motivated by rampant corruption within local leadership, where some officials allegedly misappropriate taxpayers’ funds, leading to poor service delivery and hardship for ordinary citizens.
She also accused some opponents of orchestrating violence against her campaign activities, alleging that groups have been mobilised to disrupt her meetings and intimidate her supporters.
Residents who attended the campaign highlighted pressing local challenges.
Kayeera Village LC I Chairperson Fred Mutasingwa cited lack of access to clean water, rampant livestock theft, absence of electricity, and the lack of a health facility as urgent issues requiring government attention.
As campaigning intensifies across Lyantonde District, Rwabwogo urged voters to reject violence and politics of hatred, calling on citizens to prioritise leadership that fosters unity, accountability, and improved service delivery.
