UPDATE: Police recover body of UK tourist who drowned in the Nile trying to save son

Police divers have Friday morning recovered the body of Robert Kaweesi, a UK citizen who drowned in river Nile while on vacation.

This has been confirmed by Josephine Angucia, the police spokesperson for West Nile region.

“The body of Robert Kaweesi has just been recovered by Police divers from River Nile. They are in the process of transferring the body to Pakwach health centre IV pending postmortem,” she said.

According to her the divers have found the body after two days of nonstop search from Wednesday evening when he drowned.

The deceased arrived in Uganda late last month and wedded his longtime fiancée Justine Katantazi on August 6, before proceeding to Gipir and Labong safari lodge for a holiday with his entire family.

After spending a night at the lodge, the following day he decided to swim with some of his family including his 12 year old son.

“When they went to swim in the river, the son was overpowered by the waves. The deceased wanted to rescue his son but instead drowned and his son was saved,” police said.

After postmortem at Pakwach, Angucia said the body will be handed over to the family for burial arrangements.
