Abel Kagumire has been appointed as the new Commissioner in charge of Customs at Uganda Revenue Authority.

According to a statement by the tax body, Kagumire is among the three commissioners who excelled well in written interviews conducted by the staff committee early this week.

“The URA Board of Directors at its 4t/2020 Special Board meeting held today the 26th August, 2020 interviewed candidates for the vacant Senior Management positions in the Departments of Customs, Corporate Services and Domestic Taxes,” the statement said.

Consequently, Richard Kariisa has been appointed as the new commissioner for Corporate Services whereas John Tinka Katungwensi was appointed the Assistant Commissioner in charge of the large taxpayers’ office.

“The candidates who were shortlisted for the positions of Assistant Commissioner Human Resource, Assistant Commissioner Trade, Assistant Commissioner Business policy, will be interviewed by the Board of Directors on Friday August,28 2020.”

In May, four senior staff members at URA including the commissioner in charge of domestic taxes, Dicksons Kateshumbwa, Henry Saka, the Commissioner in charge of tax investigations, Silajji Kanyesigye Baguma, the Assistant Commissioner in charge of large taxpayers office and Samuel Kahima from the Auditor domestic tax department resigned from their positions.

Whereas the four senior staff said they had resigned willingly, reports had it that these were forced to resign after being implicated in a number of scandals.

Speaking about their resignation, the URA board of directors said it was ready to staff a new era of integrity.

“Management wishes to reiterate that integrity; patriotism and professionalism will define the new era at URA developing Uganda together.”
