Three more suspects charged, remanded over Nagirinya murder

Three more suspects were on Friday arraigned before the magistrate’s court in Mengo and charged with the kidnap and subsequent murder of Maria Nagirinya and her driver Ronald Kitayimbwa.

On the night of August 28, unidentified men kidnapped driver Ronald Kitayimbwa and Nagirinya, a former employee of Community Integrated Development Initiative, an NGO from her at her gate in Busega Lungujja before killing them and their bodies were later found dumped in Mukono.

On Friday afternoon, Sadat Kateregga, aka Baros 27, Sharif Mpanga, 24 and Raymond Okori were arraigned before grade one magistrate, Esther Nyadoi and charges of kidnap, murder and aggravated robbery read for them.

The trio was however not allowed to plead to the charges because they are facing capital offences only tried by the High Court.

They were remanded to Luzira until October 25 after the state prosecutor, Safina Bakireke asked court for more time to be able to conclude investigations into the matter.

The development brings the number of suspects remanded over the kidnap and subsequent murder of Nagirinya to seven.

Last month,  four people including Coprian Kasolo, also known as Arsenal,27, Lubega Johnson aka Etoo,20, Nasif Kalyango,20 and Hassan Kisekka, 29 both boda boda riders were arraigned before the Nateete grade one magistrate's court and charged with seven counts of kidnap, murder and robbery.

The Charges

Prosecution contends  that on the night of August 28 in Nabisasiro zone, Busega, Rubaga division in Kampala district, the group of seven kidnapped Maria Nagirinya and Ronald Kitayimbwa with an intent to murder her contrary to section 243(1)(a) of the Penal Code Act.

The group of seven is also accused of using force and violence to rob Nagirinya’s vehicle, a Toyota Spacio, her mobile phone and shs260, 000 that she had in her bag, Kitayimbwa’s mobile phone and shs24000 that he had in his pockets on the  fateful night.

Following the kidnap and subsequent murder of the duo, President Museveni ordered the immediate sacking and prosecution of police officers manning the CCTV camera command control centre in Nateete over negligence.

This was after Nagirinya’s parents accused security of not helping them track the kidnappers despite being informed in time.

Consequently, 10 police officers were arrested and detained over the matter.
