The Jinja Fish Festival: Let's celebrate sustainable fisheries

The second edition of the Jinja Fish Festival is back.

Taking place at Forever Resort Jinja on 1st December 2019 the festival is a chance not only to try some delicious fish but also to learn more about the resource.

You can explore which fish comes from Lake Victoria including the popular Nile perch which currently is the fish fetching the highest foreign exchange towards Uganda’s economy.

Besides that, the ways fish is prepared seem endless: get inspired for your own kitchen at home and try something new at the festival!

Not only does the Nileperch contribute towards the Uganda’s foreign exchange, but together with other fish species including silver fish (Mukene), are generally considered a very healthy food being rich in protein, omega-3, fat acids and micro nutrients and therefore a valuable contribution to your diet.

At the festival you can also learn more about the fisheries business: where does your fish come from and what to watch out for when buying fish.

You can learn how you as a consumer can support responsible fishing that is sustainable and legal.

Fishermen and experts in the field will share their knowledge with you on a number of subjects including fish processing and how it comes from the lake onto your plates.

But there will not just be food and information about fisheries: The festival will be a good mixture of celebrating and learning about sustainable fisheries with delicious fish menu.

Uganda’s leading artists like King Saha among others will re-echo the voice of responsible fishing through musical performances.

There will be lots of awards to winning schools both primary and secondary which will be participating in sustainable fisheries awareness quiz, dance, music and art competitions, don’t miss to come as early as 08:00am to watch the sustainable fisheries battle amongst schools.

The Festival has been organized by Perfect Events with funding support from GIZ – Responsible Fisheries Business Chain Project (RFBCP) together with the organizing partners :Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization(LVFO), Directorate of Fisheries Resources (DFiR) and Uganda Fish Processors and Exporters Association (UFPEA).
