On June 16, 2007, Uganda witnessed one of the most remarkable visits by a global football superstar when then Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand arrived in Kampala.
Fresh from helping Manchester United reclaim the Premier League title, the England international chose a trip to Uganda over attending the summer weddings of some of his teammates honouring a promise made to his father, Julian Ferdinand.
What was expected to be a relatively low-key visit quickly turned into a national event.
Ferdinand landed at Entebbe International Airport alongside his father and cousin Max before being greeted by thousands of excited fans. The journey from Entebbe to Kampala became a moving celebration as crowds lined the highway, waving branches, blowing bugles and cheering wildly.
The scenes were so overwhelming that Ferdinand spent much of the drive standing through the sunroof of his vehicle, acknowledging supporters who had turned out in huge numbers to catch a glimpse of one of the world's most recognisable footballers.
The centre-back's itinerary included a meeting with Yoweri Museveni at State House, where discussions focused on football development and opportunities for young Ugandan players.
During the meeting, a promise was made to allocate 12 acres of land in Bwebajja for the development of a permanent home for the Proline Soccer Academy, a project supported by the Ferdinand family and led by former Uganda Cranes midfielder Mujib Kasule.
The following day, Ferdinand spent time with young footballers at Lugogo, conducting coaching sessions and sharing advice about the importance of combining education with sporting talent. Later, he watched a Proline academy match at a packed Nakivubo Stadium, further strengthening his connection with Ugandan football enthusiasts.
Away from the formal engagements, Ferdinand also embraced Kampala's social scene, spending an evening enjoying the city's nightlife.
Although the promised Bwebajja academy complex never materialised due to years of bureaucratic delays and land-related challenges, the visit left a lasting mark on Ugandan football.
The Ferdinand family's relationship with the country continued through subsequent visits by former Premier League striker Les Ferdinand and Rio's brother Anton Ferdinand.
More importantly, the spotlight generated by Ferdinand's visit helped elevate Proline from an academy project into a competitive football club.
The club eventually reached the top flight and achieved one of the greatest moments in its history by winning the Uganda Cup in 2019 while still a second-division side, earning the chance to represent Uganda on the continental stage.
