Gomba supporters have expressed surprise at Buweekula's underwhelming start to their 2026 Masaza Cup title defence after the reigning champions were held to a goalless draw by Kyaddondo in the tournament opener on Saturday.
The match, played at the NTC Grounds in Mubende, was expected to mark a strong beginning for Buweekula, who lifted their maiden Masaza Cup crown last season.
Instead, the champions failed to find a breakthrough in front of their home fans, prompting reactions from rival supporters across Buganda.
For many Gomba fans, the result was unexpected given Buweekula's status as defending champions and their recent displays in pre-season matches.
"We expected Buweekula to win because they were playing at home and they are the defending champions," some Gomba supporters said after the match.
"A team that has just won the Masaza Cup is expected to begin the next season with authority, especially when playing in front of its own supporters. Today's result was surprising."
The fans said their expectations had been shaped by Buweekula's recent friendly against Gomba at Kabulasoke during Gomba's squad unveiling, where the champions had looked organised and competitive.
"Last weekend we played them in a friendly and they looked well prepared. They moved the ball well and appeared ready for the season. That is why we did not expect Kyaddondo to hold them to a draw," one supporter said.
While acknowledging Kyaddondo's disciplined performance, Gomba supporters argued that a team intent on retaining the trophy should have found a way to secure all three points.
"Kyaddondo played well, but champions are judged by results. Buweekula needed to show the hunger of a defending champion, and that did not really come out in this game," another fan noted.
The opening-day draw has also strengthened belief among Gomba supporters that this season's title race could be wide open.
"If the defending champions are already dropping points at home, then every serious team will feel encouraged. We believe Gomba has a good chance to fight for the trophy this year," a supporter said.
Gomba remain the most successful side in Masaza Cup history with five titles, and their fans are hopeful the team can reclaim the crown after several seasons without success.
"We want the cup back. The supporters are ready to follow the team everywhere. The players now have to do their part on the pitch," another fan added.
Despite the rivalry, some supporters urged caution against reading too much into one result, noting that the Masaza Cup is a long tournament where teams often improve as the campaign progresses.
Still, Buweekula's failure to win their opening match has ensured that early scrutiny will follow the champions in the weeks ahead.
The 2026 Masaza Cup officially kicked off on Saturday at the NTC Grounds in Mubende with Buweekula and Kyadondo settling for a 0-0 draw.
Gomba will begin their campaign against Busiro on June 21.
This year's competition is the 22nd edition of the prestigious Buganda Kingdom tournament.
