The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has renewed the contract of Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put, extending his stay until 2028.

The announcement was made in Kampala, on Thursday.

Since taking charge, Put has guided the Cranes to qualification for AFCON, led Uganda to their first-ever CHAN quarterfinal finish, and put up a strong performance in the World Cup qualifiers where the team narrowly missed out on qualification.

His tenure has been praised for bringing tactical discipline and renewed spirit to the national side.

FUFA Chief Executive Officer Edgar Watson said the extension follows growing public interest and speculation over the coach’s future.

“We have noticed a lot of anxiety in some sectors of the public recently, rumours and speculations concerning the Head Coach of the Uganda Cranes. I am here and delighted to announce to you that FUFA has agreed with Coach Paul Put to a new contract as the Head Coach of the Uganda Cranes for the next two and a half years starting with immediate effect,” Watson said.

He explained that the new deal covers the period leading up to AFCON 2027 and confirmed that Put will continue to oversee the senior national team, the CHAN team, and the U23 side.

“FUFA has organised a friendly match this month with Chad but also received and accepted an invitation to play in Morocco. The matches will be played on the 14th and 18th of November 2025,” Watson added.

He also thanked the Government of Uganda for its continued financial support to football.

“I want to thank the Government of Uganda, our Minister of Education and Sports Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, and the President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, because of the financial assistance that they give to the players,” he said.

Coach Paul Put expressed gratitude for the trust shown in him by FUFA.

“For the extension of the contract I can say that I am very happy and I am proud because when I signed for the first time the President asked me to build a strong team for 2027,” Put said.

He added that the renewal reflects the Federation’s confidence in his work and thanked the fans and players for their support.

“You cannot imagine how many messages I received from my players who asked me to continue with Uganda and I always felt very good in Uganda. I felt respected by the Federation, by players, and also by fans,” he said.

Put pledged to continue strengthening the team and producing positive results.

“I want to continue in the next two years to come out with results with good football and like we have been doing from the beginning creating the family more strong,” he concluded.

The development comes after weeks of rumours that Cameroon national team had been interested in the Belgian tactician's services.
