Mutakubwa Shines as Uganda Beat Niger
Joel Mutakubwa’s outstanding goalkeeping helped Uganda secure a vital 2-1 win over Niger in the CHAN 2024 tournament. With confidence restored after an opening loss, Uganda now prepares to face South Africa in a crucial next match.

The Mandela National Stadium buzzed with electric energy as 34,180 fans cheered Uganda’s national team to a crucial 2-1 victory over Niger in the CHAN 2024 tournament.

Goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa of Bul was the standout hero of the night. His stellar performance featured critical saves, authoritative command of the penalty area, and calm composure under pressure, denying Niger any chance of an equaliser.

For his efforts, Mutakubwa earned the TotalEnergies Man of the Match award.

“We thank God for this moment. It’s something I’ve worked hard for, and most importantly, for the three points we’ve earned,” Mutakubwa said after the match.

More than just the last line of defence, Mutakubwa has emerged as a vocal leader on the pitch, organising Uganda’s backline, initiating attacks from goal kicks, and instilling confidence during tense moments.

The victory over Niger was a vital response following Uganda’s opening loss to Algeria. Now, the team’s focus shifts to their next challenge—South Africa.

“After the defeat to Algeria in our first game, we know every match is like a cup final. We’re going to approach the next one with the same intensity,” Mutakubwa stated.

With preparations already in full swing, both physically and mentally, the goalkeeper is determined to maintain the team’s momentum.

“We understand the threat South Africa poses, and we’re regrouping to handle that match,” he added.

Buoyed by restored confidence and passionate fan support, Uganda aims to keep their CHAN 2024 campaign alive in their upcoming clash against South Africa.
