The State Minister for Gender and Family Affairs, Peace Mutuuzo, has announced that she will not contest as an independent candidate for the Bunyangabu District Woman MP seat, following her loss in the NRM party primaries.
Mutuuzo was among the ten top ministers who were defeated during the NRM primaries held on July 17, 2025.
Mutuuzo has served as Bunyangabu Woman MP since July 1, 2017, when the district was carved out of Kabarole, becoming operational with 14 sub-counties.
Speaking as the chief guest at a capacity-building dialogue on election violence for women, Mutuuzo emphasized that stepping aside is in the best interest of the NRM party.
She said she will allow those who won the party primaries to lead the district forward.
“I will not come back as an independent; I will let those that won the party flag take the leadership role in Bunyangabu. My stepping down is an indication that I truly love my party,” Mutuuzo said.
She also urged other candidates who lost during the primaries to accept the results and avoid contesting as independents, describing such moves as selfish.
“What do you gain if you fight with the person that won you? You will be fighting with your own party. What happens if you don’t go to parliament—will you die?” Mutuuzo asked.
Her remarks underscore the importance of party unity and discipline ahead of the 2026 general elections.
