Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze has questioned the National Resistance Movement (NRM) over its decision to unveil a presidential candidate portrait, saying it is the first time the ruling party has adopted such a campaign symbol.
Nambooze noted that the practice appeared borrowed from rival parties, particularly the National Unity Platform (NUP), which recently launched the official portrait of its leader who is set to challenge the long-serving Head of State in the forthcoming elections.
“This is the first time NRM has unveiled a presidential candidate portrait. They must have seen it somewhere else,” she remarked.
Political observers say the move highlights a shift in campaign strategy, with both parties turning to symbolic imagery to appeal to voters.
NRM has historically relied on its entrenched organizational structures and the long incumbency of its leader, while NUP has embraced modern branding techniques and youthful symbolism to rally support.
The unveiling of portraits by both parties is now seen as a signal that the 2026 campaign season will be increasingly image-driven, setting the stage for a more visually competitive race between Uganda’s dominant ruling party and its strongest opposition force.
