Three Incumbent NRM MPs Lose Flag in Greater Luweero Primaries
Political tides shift as the NRM primaries in Greater Luweero bring surprising defeats for sitting MPs, setting the stage for a reshaped party lineup ahead of the 2026 general elections.

A major political shake-up swept through Greater Luweero on Thursday, July 17, as three incumbent Members of Parliament lost their National Resistance Movement (NRM) party flags in the ongoing primaries, signaling significant changes in the region’s political landscape ahead of the 2026 polls.

In Nakaseke North, incumbent Enock Nyongore was ousted by Wilber Aheebwa, who secured 5,871 votes (49.5%).

Nyongore trailed with 3,890 votes (32.8%), while long-time contender Phillip Tumukunde Ndamira came third with 1,178 votes (9.9%).

Elsewhere in Nakaseke District, State Minister for Kampala Joseph Kabuye Kyofatogabye retained his party flag with a resounding win in Nakaseke Central, collecting 13,373 votes (85.5%) against Sophie Kaikara’s 2,210 votes (14.1%).

In Nakaseke South, Charles Nsereko dominated the race with 26,156 votes (92.7%), soundly defeating Arthur Nkalubo who garnered only 1,247 votes (4.4%).

However, Nkalubo has publicly rejected the results and hinted at a possible independent run in the general election.

The Nakaseke Woman MP slot was taken by Sarah Najjuma in a landslide, as she polled 51,193 votes (96.2%), leaving her opponent Winnie Mbabazi with just 2,023 votes (3.8%).

In neighboring Nakasongola District, another sitting MP fell. Incumbent Noah Mutebi Wanzara lost the NRM flag for Nakasongola County to Stephen Bugingo Tebirondwa, who garnered 10,531 votes.

Wanzara trailed with 7,186 votes, while District Speaker Rogers Sande Bwanga followed with 3,365 votes.

The trend continued in Budyebo County, where Bernard Sekyanzi was narrowly defeated by Berunado Kimeze Ssebugga, who polled 11,811 votes. Sekyanzi followed closely with 11,064, while Ivan Akwandanaho came third with 1,455.

For the Nakasongola Woman MP race, Victorious Zawedde emerged victorious with 21,466 votes, defeating Deputy District Speaker Sarah Nakatte.

In Luwero District, the Katikamu South contest saw Abubaker Kalume clinch the party flag with 16,992 votes. Patricia Magara came second with 5,880, and former front-runner Marvin Mugisha finished third with 5,747.

In Bamunanika, Robert Kiyini secured the NRM flag with 16,350 votes, defeating former MP Ali Ndawula who polled 3,989.

Katikamu North saw Central Executive Committee (CEC) member Gaddafi Nassur triumph with 9,096 votes over former Luwero District Chairperson Ronald Ndawula, who garnered 6,931.

However, tension clouds the Luwero Woman MP primary. Leading candidates Agnes Kibibo and Cissy Mulondo remain locked in a standoff over contested results from several sub-counties.

Discrepancies on declaration forms have led to official complaints and delayed confirmation of the winner.

As the dust settles across Greater Luweero, the NRM now faces the task of uniting its base, managing emerging disputes, and presenting a consolidated front as it enters the next phase of preparations for the 2026 general elections.
