Kagabo Concedes Defeat in Bukoto South
Former opposition MP Twaha Kagabo has conceded defeat in the Bukoto South NRM primaries and pledged full support to Hajj Muyanja Mbabaali, calling for unity and peaceful politics ahead of the 2026 polls.

BUKOTO SOUTH — Dr Twaha Kagabo has officially conceded defeat in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries for Bukoto South constituency.

The man who until last month was officially a member of the opposition National Unity Platform has declared his full support for the winner, Hajj Muyanja Mbabaali.

According to the final tally from polling stations across the constituency, Mbabaali secured a resounding victory with 4,965 votes (61.78%), far ahead of Kagabo, who garnered 2,501 votes (31%).

The other contenders, Muteesasira Gonzago and Matovu Rogers, trailed with 534 votes (6%) and 37 votes (0.4%) respectively.

Speaking shortly after the results were confirmed, Dr. Kagabo — a former opposition figure who joined the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) earlier this year — congratulated Mbabaali and committed to working under the NRM umbrella.

“I wish to publicly congratulate Hajj Muyanja Mbabaali upon his well-deserved victory. The people of Bukoto South have spoken clearly, and as a democrat and a loyal supporter of the NRM, I respect their decision,” Kagabo stated.

“I will not stand as an independent candidate in the coming elections, nor will I support any individual who is not under the NRM flag.”

Calling for unity within the ruling party, Kagabo urged his supporters and fellow contenders to rally behind Mbabaali to ensure continued NRM dominance in the region.

“It is important that we stand together as one family. The strength of the NRM lies in our unity and our ability to resolve differences through democratic processes. We must now work hand in hand to ensure victory not just in Bukoto South, but across the country.”

Kagabo also reaffirmed his loyalty to President Yoweri Museveni, vowing to actively campaign for the President’s re-election in 2026.

“I will dedicate my energy and time to seeking votes for President Museveni. He remains the most visionary leader for our country, and I believe the people of Uganda continue to benefit greatly under his leadership.”

Despite conceding peacefully, Kagabo expressed concern over reports of violence and voter intimidation during the primaries. He condemned such incidents and called on the party to uphold discipline.

“I strongly condemn anyone who was involved in acts of violence during this process. Such actions do not reflect the values of the NRM and only serve to damage the reputation of the party. If we are to remain competitive and credible, we must conduct our political activities peacefully and with respect for all participants.”

Kagabo’s political journey has drawn national attention in recent months. Once a vocal member of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), he made headlines earlier this year when he defected to the PLU — a political pressure group aligned with Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the First Son and Commander of the UPDF Land Forces.

His latest declaration signals a full integration into the NRM mainstream and a realignment with President Museveni’s leadership and political infrastructure.

With the primaries concluded, all eyes now turn to how the NRM consolidates support in Bukoto South and across the Lwengo sub-region ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Hajj Muyanja Mbabaali, now the official flag bearer, is expected to face stiff competition from opposition challengers in what promises to be a fiercely contested race.
