KAMPALA - Chief Justice Alfonso Owiny-Ddolo has urged the government to provide the Electoral Commission with adequate funds to enable them carry out civic education ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Owiny-Ddolo's call is built on a conviction that there are Ugandans out there who are yet to understand why elections are organised.
"We have taken it for granted," said Owiny-Ddolo. "We think that people know these things they have been voting."
The chief justice made the remarks as he presided over the swearing-in ceremony of the Electoral Commission officials led by Justice Simon Byabakama.
In his rallying cry for funding, the CJ said civic education was an urgent matter for the commission.
"The Electoral Commission must be given money today to carry out civic education," said the Chief Justice
Byabakama, who was last month reappointed for another term by President Museveni, led six commissioners to take oath
All these swore to exercise their roles “without fear or favour, affection or ill will”
Byabakama re-echoed the need for more funds to enable them do their job
"The provision of inadequate funds has not allowed us to conduct adequate, appropriate and meaningful over or civic education," he said.
