A lively debate on whether DNA testing should become routine in relationships took centre stage during the ninth edition of Gilbey's Hangouts at Old Tymerz Kafunda in Ntinda on Friday evening.
The monthly social event, which combines cocktails with open discussions, attracted guests who gathered to unwind over different Gilbey's cocktail flavours before engaging in a conversation inspired by recent public discussions surrounding the late Paulo Kafeero's family.
The discussion quickly split opinions, with many male participants arguing that DNA testing should be conducted at birth to eliminate uncertainty over paternity.
"Nowadays, it's difficult to trust completely. A child may have your smile, your nose and even your walking style, only for a DNA test to tell a different story. I believe DNA testing should be done at birth," one participant joked, drawing laughter and applause from fellow attendees.
Female participants, however, expressed reservations, arguing that making DNA testing routine reflects declining trust between couples and could further strain relationships. Others maintained that open communication should always come before suspicion, resulting in the spirited exchanges that have become a hallmark of Gilbey's Hangouts.
Speaking during the event, Gilbey's Brand Manager, Raymond Karama, said the platform continues to provide an environment where meaningful conversations thrive.
"Every Friday, we're reminded that people are looking for authentic spaces to unwind, laugh, and have conversations that matter. These conversations bring out that connection element among people that keeps the spark alive," Karama said.
Host Ronnie McVex thanked both returning and first-time guests for contributing to the discussions.
"The beauty of these conversations is that everyone has a voice. We want people to leave happier than they arrived. That's how we keep the good times going," he said.
Held on the last Friday of every month, Gilbey's Hangouts continues to blend entertainment, cocktails and topical conversations, giving revellers a relaxed setting to socialise while debating issues that resonate with everyday life.
