National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate and former Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament Idah Nabayiga has pledged to continue development projects initiated during her previous term and advanced by the late Helen Nakimuli if elected to the 12th Parliament.
Nabayiga made the commitment during the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election debate hosted by NBS Television on Monday.
She said several development projects were launched during her tenure as Woman MP from 2016 to 2021, noting that Nakimuli built on those efforts before her untimely death.
“My condolences to the people of Kalangala on the loss of our fellow leader, Helen Nakimuli,” Nabayiga said.
“During my time as MP for Kalangala, I initiated several projects. The late Helen Nakimuli built on that work, and I am committed to continuing from where she left off.”
Nabayiga will face competition from Irene Nampala of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and independent candidates Sharifah Babirye Kaala, Agnes Nassuuna and Hellen Nagawa in the by-election.
The poll, scheduled for Wednesday, will determine the successor to Nakimuli, whose death created a vacancy in the district's parliamentary representation.
Nakimuli died on April 19, 2026, at Alexandra Medical Centre in Kitante, Kampala, aged 40.
She passed away shortly after undergoing surgery to treat uterine fibroids, only months after securing a second term in Parliament.
The by-election campaign has largely focused on service delivery, development priorities and the future direction of leadership in the island district.
