For a long time, the mind and body were considered separate entities, while mental health being seen as unrelated to physical well-being.A recent research conducted by the National Institutes of Health has revealed a strong link between mental health and the immune system.

Your mental state can either be boosted or weakened by your immune system, making you more susceptible to diseases as said by Leona Buhenzire psychotherapist at a Mental Health Support Systems.

Studies have shown that chronic stress, anxiety, and depression can suppress the immune system, making you more vulnerable to infections and diseases. This can lead to type 2 diabetes, arthritis and obesity. Stress and anxiety can increase the production of cortisol, a hormone that suppresses the immune system. That's why some people can either stress eat or not eat at all

Depression can reduce the production rate of white blood cells, making you more susceptible to infections. Have you ever exhibited malaria or typhoid-like symptoms? Well, that is your mind telling you that it is burdened.

On the other hand, positive mental states like happiness, gratitude, and relaxation can strengthen your immune system. It helps the body fight diseases like flu and headaches among others.

Positive mental state can increase the production of antibodies, which fight off infections and this is why some people barely fall sick.

The mind-body connection is real, and taking care of your mental health is crucial for your overall well-being. By practicing stress-reducing techniques like meditation, exercise, and seeking help when needed, you can keep your immune system strong and your body healthy.
