This morning during the ongoing Stakeholders’ Consultations and Sensitization on Artisanal Mining Regulations in the Kigezi Region, Hon. Phiona Nyamutoro, the State Minister for Mineral Development, narrowly escaped being shot at by private security guards of National Cement Co., a subsidiary of the Devki Group.
The incident occurred while Minister Nyamutoro had visited the National Cement Co site to sensitize the miniers on the importance of adhering to artisanal mining regulations aimed at promoting sustainable and legal mining practices.
This company is allegedly carrying out illegal mining activities in Kisoro District.
The situation was quickly averted and Minister Nyamutoro was escorted to safety by her security detail while the private security guards were disarmed.
No injuries were reported.
