The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a political pressure group associated with First Son and Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has directed its affiliated Members of Parliament-elect in the 12th Parliament to support candidates endorsed by the National Resistance Movement Central Executive Committee for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
In a communication issued to the legislators, PLU General Secretary David Kabanda said the directive aims to promote unity, discipline and coordination among members aligned to the group as the new Parliament prepares to elect its leadership.
Kabanda congratulated the MPs-elect on their victory and reminded them of the responsibility that comes with representing their constituencies in the national legislature.
“Congratulations on your successful election to the 12th Parliament of the Republic of Uganda. Your victory reflects the trust and confidence that your electorates have in your abilities and competencies,” Kabanda said in the message.
He also urged the legislators to uphold the core principles of the Patriotic League of Uganda, including patriotism, integrity, transformation and commitment to socio-economic development as they prepare to take on their legislative duties.
The PLU specifically called on its members to support incumbent Speaker Anita Annet Among for the position of Speaker and Thomas Tayebwa for Deputy Speaker, both of whom were endorsed by the NRM’s Central Executive Committee.
Among, who has served as Speaker since 2022 following the death of Jacob Oulanyah, is seeking to retain the position in what is expected to be a competitive race.
The Speakership has in particular attracted spirited contest from Norbert Mao, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs and president general of the Democratic Party.
While Mao is a DP leader with NRM coat, Persis Namuganza, the Bukono County MP-elect and State Minister for Housing; Alioni Yorke Odria, the Aringa South County MP; and Lydia Wanyoto Mutende, the Mbale City Woman MP-elect are all NRM.
But the party last week endorsed Among and Tayebwa, so much to the chagrin of the rest who are contesting the endorsement as undemocratic - although they did not contest a similar one for President Museveni back in July.
According to Kabanda, the two leaders have demonstrated experience and capacity in guiding parliamentary debate and ensuring the smooth running of the House.
“The leadership of the Patriotic League of Uganda appeals to you to maintain decorum, dignity and discipline during the selection process of these important leaders,” Kabanda added.
The directive signals PLU’s effort to maintain cohesion among its members and strengthen its influence within the leadership structure of the incoming 12th Parliament.
