A Mubende woman who was abandoned by her husband after a debilitating accident has given birth to a baby girl, raising hopes for a fresh start despite her dire circumstances.
Jane Katushabe, who suffered fractures to both legs seven months ago, had been bedridden and struggling to care for her children in a single-room home.
In the weeks leading up to her delivery, she appealed to well-wishers for basic necessities, including maternity supplies.
On Wednesday, Katushabe went into labour and was assisted by her neighbour, Maritah Mutoni, who helped her deliver safely at home.
“I started feeling abdominal pain and called my neighbor for help. Eventually, I gave birth in my room,” Katushabe recounted.

Despite her challenging situation, she expressed relief and gratitude for the safe delivery.
“I want to praise God for giving me the strength to give birth. I have not been able to move since the accident seven months ago,” she said.
Katushabe also thanked Mutoni for her unwavering support.
“She is always available whenever I need her and responds quickly because my children are still young and cannot manage everything on their own,” Katushabe added.
While the birth has brought joy, Katushabe still faces urgent medical and financial needs, particularly to treat her fractures and rebuild her life.
“I am happy for my baby, and now I have hope that I can move again. The seven months I have spent bedridden have been very hard,” she said.
Mutoni, who assisted during the delivery, expressed her own joy and thanked God for a safe birth.
“I am the happiest today because I was worried about how she would give birth. But God has done it for her,” she said.
Katushabe is now a mother of six, raising four of her children alone in her small rented home - with two of her children having left the home to fend for themselves.
Katushabe said she was abandoned by her husband Imaana Irikumwenatwe, who is believed to have gone back to his native Rwanda.
