Former Kawempe South MP Mubarak Munyagwa is set to unveil his rebranded political party, The Common Man’s Party, previously known as the Uganda Economic Party (UEP).
The development signals a potential shift in Uganda’s opposition dynamics ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The rebrand appears to be a strategic move aimed at tapping into growing voter frustration with aging and fragmented opposition parties.
However, the party’s long-term viability will depend on its ability to build solid structures, mobilise grassroots support, and present a compelling alternative to dominant political forces.
Munyagwa, formerly affiliated with the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), publicly distanced himself from the party in June 2024, citing what he described as “poor management” under the current leadership.
He also ruled out joining the National Unity Platform (NUP), labeling it “poorly managed” and allegedly influenced by its leadership’s personal interests.
During a televised appearance on Sanyuka TV, Munyagwa criticised the state of Uganda’s opposition, accusing several parties of prioritising personal gain over collective democratic goals .
