Presidential aspirant Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde yesterday failed to appear at the CID headquarters in Kibuli for the second time in one week, making his arrest imminent.
He was expected to report and record a statement regarding his alleged meetings with veterans in Lugazi.
Through his lawyers, Tumukunde said the summons and contents have no legal backing, and thus, he could not report.
"The summons didn't disclose an offence, for that reason ,we couldn't appear before police on allegations that he doesn't know. Police has exhibited double standard,"Robert Kagolo ,one of Tumukunde's lawyers told journalists on Tuesday.
He added: "Why do you stop Gen. Tumukunde from consulting the veterans if at all he consulted the veterans. Veterans are voters. Our client is an aspiring presidential candidate. He is at liberty to consult anybody who is eligible to vote"
Francis Harimwomugasho, another lawyer, said they intend to complain to Electoral Commission about the police witch hunting their client who is an aspirant for the highest office in this land.
According to police, Tumukunde has been holding meetings with army veterans with the intention of mobilising and engaging them in subversive activities.
The spokesperson of the CID, Charles Twiine, said Tumukunde has been given two options including arrest which is provided for in the law.
Recently, Tumukunde was intercepted by police in Lugazi on his way to meet his supporters.
"We hope that he won't send us to the other lawful options because sometimes they may not look decent. We are talking of a leader whose pedigree in leadership is very clear," said Twiine.
