UNRA needs Shs 2 trillion for oil roads

The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) needs $600 million (Shs 2.1 trillion) to construct crucial roads in the oil-rich Albertine region.

Allen Kagina, the executive director of UNRA said the poor roads in the region have hindered the transportation of crucial machinery needed for oil exploration and refining.

“We have equipment which should be transported from the airport to this region for assembly. So what kind of roads are they going to use?” Kagina said.

Kagina, while on a working visit to Hoima and Buliisa districts also revealed that UNRA needs this money to  construct 600 kilometres saying Exim bank is ready to provide a loan.

Recently, President Museveni launched the 1,445 kilometre oil pipeline which is expected to be completed by 2020.

Currently , UNRA uses Shs 274 billion per year for road maintenance however Kagina said road maintenance requires more funding.
