As the world marked the International Water Day 2019 on March 22, countries in sub Saharan Africa continued to struggle to access clean water.
In Uganda, the pre-paid water taps installed by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) remain out of bounds for some, especially where landlords fence them off.
A drive through the divisions of Kampala demonstrate the the depth of the water problem, with residents lining up for water from streams and village wells.
But how safe is the water opted for by many?
Silver Mugisha, the managing director of NWSC told us they were experiencing some funding constraints which have hindered them from improving the water situation.
He said in some urban areas where they want to install pre-paid taps, land acquisition remains a challenge while in others, the taps have not been well maintained.
Only 84% of urban population in Uganda can access safe water.
According to NWSC a plan has been laid to make sure that the target of 100% is met in the near future.
