BUBU policy: Minister cautions on standards of goods

The Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Amelia Kyambadde, has warned marketers and shop keepers against the improper display of foods and fruits, which she says has affected the quality of products, thus affecting the Build Uganda Buy Uganda (BUBU) policy.

Kyambadde sounded the caution during a media briefing on the much anticipated BUBU expo that will be held at Kololo Independence grounds.

The expo is aimed at creating awareness about the BUBU policy.

Government has on several occasions drummed up the Buy Uganda, Build Uganda policy (BUBU) aimed at popularising the consumption of locally produced goods with the aim of stimulating the growth of indigenous industries.

So far, government has been able to register improved capacity of local producers and service delivery and improved the quality and standard of local products in the textile, iron and steel sectors among others. But Kyambadde said some sectors like the leather industry are still lagging behind.

She said the failure of marketeers and shop keepers to adhere to the required standards is affecting the quality of the produce thus hindering the success of the policy.

Kyambadde said her ministry is going to work hand in hand with other authorities to curb the problem.
