Police in Mityana District have confirmed the arrest of an Electoral Commission official accused of soliciting and receiving a bribe of Shs268,000 from a candidate contesting for the Local Council I (LC I) chairperson seat.
The suspect, identified as John Mawejje Kwizera, 45, a resident of Butega Village in Ttamu Division, serves as the Electoral Commission supervisor for Central Division in Mityana Municipality.
According to police, Kwizera was arrested following allegations that he received the money on July 24, 2026, from William Bukenya, an LC I chairperson candidate for Kansuleeti Village.
Police allege that Kwizera promised to manipulate the official Declaration of Results Form in Bukenya’s favour by declaring him the winner, regardless of the actual outcome of the election.
Wamala Regional Police spokesperson Lameka Kigozi confirmed the arrest, saying the suspect had been charged with bribery and would be produced before court.
“The suspect is in police custody on allegations of receiving a bribe from an election candidate. Investigations have been completed, and he will be produced in court to answer the charges,” Kigozi said.
Kigozi warned Electoral Commission officials across the region against engaging in electoral malpractice, saying security agencies are closely monitoring the conduct of election officials throughout the electoral process.
“Election officials must execute their duties with integrity and impartiality. Anyone found manipulating election results or soliciting bribes will face the full force of the law,” he warned.
He also urged Ugandans to participate peacefully in the ongoing LC I elections, describing voting as a constitutional right that must be exercised responsibly.
However, Kigozi cautioned individuals who intend to disrupt the electoral process, saying security agencies have put in place measures to respond to acts of violence, intimidation or disorder.
“We encourage all eligible voters to turn up and vote peacefully. At the same time, anyone intending to cause chaos or interfere with the electoral process should know that the Police are fully prepared to take decisive action,” he added.
The arrest comes as security agencies intensify efforts to safeguard the integrity of the LC I elections by addressing allegations of bribery, vote manipulation and other electoral offences that could undermine public confidence in the democratic process.
