Kivumbi’s lawyer, Sam Muyizzi, says his client was arrested from Mpigi and taken away in what he described as a drone vehicle, commonly used to refer to an unmarked security van.
A video of the incident, published by AfroMobile, shows Traffic Police intercept Kivumbi who was travelling in a white Land Cruiser, his way blocked. After he opens the door to step out, security operatives in plainclothes swoop in on him, lifting him into a numberless white drone.
The arrest comes barely a day after Justice Susan Okalanyi granted Kivumbi and 16 of his co-accused bail, ending 169 days of detention on terrorism charges linked to violence that followed the January 2026 general elections.
Kivumbi had been released on a cash bail of Shs10 million, while each of the 16 co-accused was granted Shs1 million bail.
The court had ordered the accused to report monthly and barred them from leaving Uganda without permission as their trial continues.
They are accused of offences allegedly committed between January 11 and 15, 2026, in Kibibi, Butambala District, where prosecutors allege attacks on a polling station and Kibibi Police Station resulted in the deaths of seven people. The accused deny the charges.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the reported re-arrest.
