Katikkiro Mayiga Condemns Human Rights Abuses During Visit to Lukwago’s Home

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has expressed concern over what he described as cruel acts committed against citizens, saying such actions undermine the country’s image and weaken respect for human rights.

Mayiga made the remarks while visiting the home of Erias Lukwago in Wakaliga following Lukwago’s arrest and detention at Luzira Prison.

He praised Lukwago for what he called his unwavering loyalty to the Kabaka despite serving in various public offices and assured his family and supporters that they would not be abandoned.

“The acts being committed against people are unacceptable and do not reflect the image our country should portray,” Mayiga said.

He called on those in authority to listen to concerns raised by different stakeholders and ensure that citizens’ fundamental rights are respected and protected.

“Those entrusted with authority should listen to the guidance offered by different people and respect the rights and freedoms of all citizens,” he added.

Lukwago’s lawyer, Medard Lubega Ssegona, informed the Katikkiro that Lukwago had been discharged from Mulago National Referral Hospital and returned to Luzira Prison. He criticised the handling of citizens in custody, arguing that due process and the rule of law are often disregarded in such situations.

He said the manner in which citizens are treated, without full adherence to the law, remains deeply concerning.
