FACT-CHECK: Viral Screenshot Claiming Muhoozi Kainerugaba Announced He Overthrew President Museveni is FALSE

A viral screenshot circulating on social media claims to show Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, posting on X (formerly Twitter):

“I have overthrown my father and I am now the President of Uganda. I am tired of pretending.”

The image has been shared as evidence that Gen. Muhoozi announced a coup against President Yoweri Museveni.

Verdict: FALSE



The screenshot is fabricated. There is no evidence that Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba ever published such a post on his verified X account.

A review of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s verified X account shows no post containing the alleged statement.

Had Uganda’s military chief publicly declared that he had overthrown the President, the statement would have triggered immediate coverage from major local and international news organisations. No such reports exist.

Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba is known for making provocative and controversial posts on social media. However, his history of controversial commentary should not be used as evidence that every viral screenshot attributed to him is genuine.
